The carnival procession on June 12 is the highlight of Lisbon’s Festas dos Santos Populares. This parade is officially known as “Marchas dos Bairros” (Marches of the neighborhoods) or, simply, as “Marchas populares” or “Marches” The March of Alto do Pina, is one of the oldest in the city, and represents a tradition that speaks about the memory of the city, and specifically the cultural diversity of this neighborhood.
Viver melhor no bairro

Treze passos
Guided by Tiago, a neighbor of the Picheleira neighborhood since birth, we delve into a stigmatized neighborhood in Lisbon known as Barrio Branco. Drug sales and consumption mark the daily life of the neighborhood, but so does neglect by the authorities and the police who do not repair the damage caused by their actions. Containers covered in dirt, a vacant lot full of rats used as a park for children, or facades of tiles falling due to lack of maintenance are part of the daily life of the families living here.
Indignation grows when compared to the neighborhood next door. Just thirteen steps away, there are fountains with drinking water even for dogs, and the containers are underground, thus avoiding bad odors.
Tiago wants the neighborhood that saw him born to improve and tells us about it through his perspective.
